Just a few more thoughts on the beginning of a New Year…

What better time to ask the greatest question of all?

Am I truly answering the call of God on my life?

Too few of us take the time to ask this question. Primarily because we assume the answers are to be found in the things we’re already doing. If I’m a good wife, if I go to church, study the Bible or send my children to a Christian school, then isn’t the answer an obvious ‘yes’?

In Matthew 4:19, Jesus told His earliest disciples to follow Him and He would make them “fishers of men.” It’s unfortunate that the symbolism of this passage makes it easy to overlook the command.

First we are to follow.

Then we are to fish.

Look, Chur-chianity is fairly easy. It’s convenient. As women, it focuses us on what we’re already doing. It’s comfortable. It’s a safe space. Got it.

Yet over and over Jesus showed us that the life of the spirit and the power of God cannot be found in comforting ritual. The life of the spirit and the power of God can only be found through sacrificial obedience to the call of God. As we obey, more of God is revealed in and through us. As we sacrifice, more of the power of God is granted to us. As we love, the joy of the Lord buoys our spirit and sustains us.

Make this the year you obey. Make this the time you sacrifice. That you love your neighbor as you love yourself.

It is time to put our hands to the plow…to share the good news of Jesus, to feed the hungry, to care for the sick and elderly, to visit those who are in prison. It isn’t easy. Nor is it convenient or comfortable or particularly comforting.

But what would you do if Jesus Himself stood before you, stretched out his hand and said “follow me”? Would you give Him your hand? Or would you, like the rich young ruler, find something else to do?

Today, Jesus’ hand is outstretched and He is offering you the opportunity of a lifetime.

You should say yes.
