It’s 10:00 at night, the kids are finally tucked in bed after dinner, homework and various other diversions. It’s the first moment you’ve had all day to think about anything beyond the immediate. You feel that niggling idea again of how you want to do something more. You feel God is telling you that He wants you to do more. But how can you find your ministry in between the laundry and carpooling?

It Doesn’t Have To Be Earth-Shattering

Not everything we do has to make headline news. It may not seem like it makes a difference, but you never know what kind of impact you may have even in the small things you do. Instead of focusing on big programs and grand ideas, start with something small. Something simple that you can fit into your schedule and commit to on a regular basis. God has a way of rewarding faithfulness far beyond what you might expect.

One of the easiest ways to get involved in ministry is by joining a current cause. If you look in your community, you will likely see programs already in place where you can be of assistance. Your church or other churches may have their own ministries where they need additional volunteers. Some programs such as food pantries need help once a week or even once a month, while others require volunteer help every day.

Look for places that have openings that fit with your schedule. At the same time, rethink your current schedule and decide if you can make more time to be involved in ministry. Ask God to show you where He wants you to work and be willing to give Him more of your time. This may mean a sacrifice on your part, but remember that Jesus came to serve and not be served. Can we say the same?

Know Your Talents

God gave each person basic talents and strengths that He wants to be used for His work. Analyze yours to get ideas of where you can minister. For instance, if you have a heart for the elderly, senior centers and nursing homes often look for volunteers who can donate a few hours. Check with your community services or public agencies about ways you can get involved. Schools often know of programs that are in place to help with at-risk kids.
Let your friends and family know you are searching for an opportunity to get involved in ministry. Be careful that you only tell people who are going to be supportive or you may find that they spend more time trying to talk you out of it than supporting you.

Even if you live in a small community, you can find places of need. If you happen to live near or in a larger city, the opportunities are limitless. Instead of searching for places to serve, you will be narrowing down your choices. Just remember that if you tell God you want to serve, He will find a place for you.
