You’ve often heard people say that they are “called” to ministry or that they know that a certain ministry is their calling. For those who aren’t involved, they offer the excuse that they haven’t been called. What exactly is this “call” and how do you know if you have received it?
Jesus Called You
If you look at what is known as the Great Commission in the Bible, you know that you have already been called. However, that is not the only time Christians were called into ministry. Matthew 20:28 says that Jesus came not to be served but to serve. Since we are to imitate Him, it also means we are to be serving others as well.
In James, it says that to visit the fatherless and the widows is considered pure religion. These are just a few of the instances in the Bible where Christians are called to be in service to those in need. You do not need to receive a special calling. You were chosen from the time you became a Christian. Everyone is expected to be involved in ministry. The only question that remains is where.
Bloom Where You are Planted
An old saying, “bloom where you are planted” means to be productive where you are now. That sentiment is especially true when it comes to ministry. Take the account of the parable of talents in the Bible. Each person was given a different number of talents. For those who used theirs, more were given to them. If you take the skills and talents you have been given and work in the area around you, then you will be given more opportunities to serve God.
Start with what you know and God will make the path clear for you as you go along. The problem is so often with taking the first step. We overthink things and are unsure of what we are supposed to be doing, so we do nothing. Instead, people would be more productive if they just started somewhere. Volunteer where there is a need. Find an opening that utilizes your talents and fill it. It doesn’t have to be a lifelong dedication, but you have to start somewhere. Once you step up and step into service, God will direct you where He wants you. The problem lies not in where you will serve, but if you will serve.
Everyone is called, but not everyone answers. Will you be one who answers the call?
