A popular phrase in today’s culture, especially among younger people, is the idea of “keeping it real.” The desire not to have to pretend to be something we aren’t is the new norm for many. But as Christians, do we “keep it real”? Are we living authentic lives, showing and sharing our faith, not by what we say but by what we do?

A look at 1 Timothy 6:18-19 gives us an idea of what a “real Christian” looks like.

“Let them do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves a good foundation for the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.”

Rich in Good Works

Look at the context of the verse by reading the verses just before, and it will seem like Paul is addressing those who are rich. However, if you read the entire chapter, you will see that he is actually addressing anyone who has their needs met. They are truly the ones who are rich. As verse 6 says, “godliness with contentment is great gain.” If we are content to have our basic needs met, we all have to admit we have more than we need, if not more than we want.

So, what does this passage say to us about being a real Christian? We know that works don’t save us, but faith without works is dead. Our “good deeds” show others that we don’t follow our own desires, since the natural inclination is to put self first. If we want to be authentic in our Christian walk, we must be rich in good works, ready to give and willing to share. By doing so, we store up our foundation for eternal life. At the same time, it enhances our lives here on earth.

What a Real Christian Looks Like

Spend some time on these verses and imagine what they look like in action. Maybe you already know someone who exemplifies what Paul was talking about. Being rich in good works implies this person is always finding ways to help others. They are the first to bring a meal to someone who is sick or welcome new members into the church or the community. They volunteer their time with worthy causes, both inside and out of the church.

Ready to give shows they are on alert for anyone who is needy. If they hear about a need, they speak up and are the first to find a way to help. They don’t sit back and wait to see if someone else will offer their time or money.

The person is willing to share. Share what? Their time, their money, even their home by opening it up to those who don’t have a family. Through it all, they share the love of God in everything they do. Because they live a giving life, it’s obvious that it doesn’t come from them, but from Someone they serve.

If we want to keep it real and let others see the One Who lives in us and compels us to join Him in ministry, we must be rich in good works, ready to give and willing to share.
