Many years ago, a book called “In His Steps” was released. Several years after that, an updated version came out, “In His Steps Today.” Originally written in 1896 by Charles Sheldon, it addressed the question of how to live for God on a daily basis. One aspect of the story was how business leaders and managers could bring their faith to their jobs.

In the story, the leaders faced scrutiny and criticism for actions that seemed certain to cost them sales and revenue and would ruin their businesses. Fast forward to today and you see that nothing has changed. Businesses that attach the “Christian” label to their organizations, such as Hobby Lobby and Chick-Fil-A are still attacked for the decisions the companies make.

What It Means to Be a Christian Business

Many businesses have Christian leaders and managers on the inside. But very few of those are viewed by the people on the outside as Christian businesses. It is only when a company takes a stand and even puts the faith of the owners in the mission statement that it is labeled as such.
Owners who publicly announce that the business will be operating under Christian principles are placed under intense scrutiny. Every action is analyzed and often criticized, especially when the company takes an unpopular stand. Even the behaviors of the employees garner extra attention.

All too often you only hear about the negative news against Christian businesses. Any positive information is ignored or downplayed. Owners and managers must be prepared to explain their actions and even face lawsuits for decisions.

Standing Strong in the Face of Opposition

The backlash for businesses that choose to operate publicly under the label of Christian is often harsh and difficult to bear. It can wear one down over time. However, these businesses serve as beacons of light in a dark world. While the media and many activist groups often stand against them, many others secretly admire them for taking a stand.  They also point the way for other businesses to operate in the same manner, even if it is in a less obvious way.

Unless your business is a major corporation with ties in numerous cities, you probably won’t face as much opposition. But you can search the news and find that even Mom-and-Pop stores are criticized for their stands on issues.

If you are a business owner or manager that is taking a stand for your faith, be prepared for the critics. It’s not always easy to do what is right, especially when it seems that everyone is watching and waiting for you to fail or make a mistake. Just remember that when it seems like you are standing alone, you are never really alone. God is standing right beside you, and He is your Defender.
