We all like maps or formulas to get us where we want to go. If we’re looking for a way to get involved in ministry with no idea of where to start, a list of steps sounds like an easy method of determining where we should serve. However, these three steps are a lot more difficult than what they might seem on the surface. With a commitment to follow through, they can help you determine the role God has given you in ministry.
1. Give It All to God
It’s easy to say that God has control of our lives, but another thing to live that concept out. Sit down and make a list of everything you own or what you feel belongs to you. Your home, your car, your job, your spouse and your children should all make it on the list along with your belongings.
As Christians, we are stewards of everything God gives us, but He is the ultimate owner. How different we might act if we believed in our hearts that God is really the owner of everything on the list. Take time to pray over that list and give it all back to God. Ask Him to help you be a good steward of everything He has entrusted to you.
2. Focus on Being More than Doing
We live in a busy society where we must be doing something, preferably multitasking all of the time. It’s difficult to hear God’s still small voice amidst all of the chaos and busyness. Spend time getting to know God instead of just trying to do for Him.
As you develop your quiet time with God and make it a consistent part of your life, He will show you where He wants you to serve. The first step is deepening your relationship with Him and growing closer to Him so that you can serve Him in the place where you belong.
3. Be Prepared to Stand
Being involved in ministry isn’t easy. You will have to stand up for your faith and often stand out from others. You’ll have to be strong against criticism, negative comments and actions, and anger from others. Be willing to stand up for your beliefs against the injustices you see around you.
If you’re the type of person who quietly lives out your faith and aren’t willing to antagonize others by verbally and physically standing up for what you believe, you’re going to have to make some changes. Living a life of ministry means speaking up even when it isn’t popular. You must speak up for the God you follow and become a voice for those who have none.
These three steps aren’t one-time challenges. They are a new way of living your life so that you may be prepared for the ministry God has given you. He has already decided on a place where He wants to use you; you just have to be ready to move into that ministry. Giving everything in your life to God, spending quiet time focusing on Him and learning how to stand up for your beliefs will enable you to move into the ministry He has designed for you.
