They knew nothing about her, except that she was “Christian.” No one knew how or why she was given that label, but it made them watch her more closely. They analyzed the way she dressed, talked about how late she stayed out, and even watched what her kids did every day. One mistake was all they were looking for to list her as a hypocrite or a bigot.

Under a Microscope

It doesn’t matter if you are an individual, a Christian ministry or a business with a Christian foundation, that one word often puts you under a microscope. People watch you more closely to see if you live like they think a Christian should. Some are waiting for you to make a mistake so they can criticize you while others are genuinely interested in finding out if your lifestyle matches your claim.

It is difficult to live under the watchful eye of your critics, especially when you are involved in ministry. And yet, this attitude among nonbelievers isn’t anything new. People watched Jesus to see if He would live up to His reputation or if they could catch Him doing wrong. Even Pilate could find no fault in Him. Of course, that wasn’t enough to exonerate Him in the eyes of the people. And it won’t be enough for you.

Dealing with Criticism with Dignity

You might think that when you are working to help others in ministry that you would be more appreciated. However, that is often not the case. The name “Christian” puts a black mark on anything you would do. Many Christian organizations are being labeled as hate groups because they do not support the popular ideas of the day. In fact, that focus often takes away from all of the good the organizations are doing.

Just as Jesus bore the criticism without answering back or sinking to the level of His accusers, we must adopt that same attitude today. While it is tempting to say that you don’t care what others think, you must look beyond your own personal views to how your actions and reactions impact your ministry. There is a fine line between standing up for what you believe and adopting an offensive attitude.

Paul spoke about that very thing when he told the early Christians not to do anything that would make others stumble. At the same time, he was never hesitant about standing up for what he believed. He is a good example for us to follow today as we work in ministry and live under the spotlight.

Be Prepared

If you are getting involved in ministry, even on a part-time volunteer basis, be prepared to have your actions, words and motivations questioned and analyzed. You will be criticized by someone and possibly even slandered. Model the attitudes and actions of Jesus and Paul. Let everything you say be the truth spoken in love. Do not be ashamed for what you believe, but always seek to live a blameless life. Be willing to admit when you do wrong, and avoid antagonizing others just because you are tired of their attitudes.

Living the Christian life has never been easy, and it becomes even more difficult when you have the spotlight on you because your beliefs disagree with what is socially acceptable. Just remember that you never walk alone. With Christ by your side, you can hold your head high even when everyone is watching you.
