You see them in the news, cheer them for their stands even in the midst of controversy. They are Christian businesses, corporations, LLCs and sole proprietorships. But have you thought about what it is really like to be recognized as a Christian entrepreneur?
Taking a Stand
Often, companies have to take a stand for what they believe. This brings more attention to them than if it were an individual. For instance, Chick-fil-A was embroiled in controversy when it donated money to Christian organizations that were called anti-gay. These organizations supported many other causes but this one aspect is what drew attention. Check-fil-A received a lot of negative publicity during that time.
Not all controversy is about religious or moral values. The company has also been involved in issues regarding how they produce their food. While this is no different than other companies, they are often scrutinized in a different way because of their public stand on Christianity.
Being recognized publicly as a Christian business means you are likely to suffer more scrutiny in every aspect of your business practices. Are you prepared to deal with being under a microscope?
Being a Family
Christian companies are often seen as treating employees like family. They are expected to offer better working conditions than other businesses and behave differently towards employees. What is your responsibility to those who work for you if your goal in business is to honor Christ?
Look at Hobby Lobby. It has long been known as a Christian company and includes its beliefs in the business decisions. The stores are closed on Sunday with a public statement on the doors that say they want to allow employees time to worship and spend with their families.
The company has also been embroiled in recent controversy, but it is known as a great place to work. It pays higher wages than many other companies that are similar to it and also offers benefits.
Decisions you make in regards to your human resources policies and how you treat your staff must be a direct reflection of your religious beliefs if you want to be seen as a Christian business. The desire to make money and be successful cannot override your responsibility to those who work for you.
Responsibility to Others
What about your responsibility to customers, vendors and even the community? How should being a Christian business change the way you interact with those around you? Getting involved in charitable causes or even establishing your own shows you care about other people and can love as Jesus loved. And yet, you must think about the repercussions and even the legality of everything you do.
Conducting your business in an ethical manner is essential to the stand you take. If you choose to be recognized for your faith in your business, you must involve Christ in all of your decisions to ensure that your behavior reflects your beliefs. You must also be willing and prepared to deal with the backlash that is sure to come. Just remember that as you reflect Christ in your company, you will also bear the consequences that it brings. Rather than making you shy away from such a stand, it should embolden you to continue on and be a light shining in a dark world.
